Read this before you apply

Iraqi nationals are not eligible for the e-Visa

Iraq does not appear on India's e-Visa eligible country list. You must apply for the paper Medical (MED) visa through VFS Global in Baghdad or Basra, or directly at the Embassy's consular wing for diplomatic, official, service and UN passport holders.

Which visa you can apply for

Iraq is not on India's e-Visa eligible list. You must apply for the paper Medical (MED) visa at Embassy of India, Baghdad.

Processing time

The Consulate General in Erbil states a minimum of one working day for medical visas — a floor, not a guarantee. The general rule is a minimum of three working days.

Validity

Fee tiers run up to 6 months, and more than 6 months up to 1 year. Iraq is one of 30 nationalities excluded from the default six-month triple-entry option, so the Mission decides duration case by case.

Entries

Single or multiple for the up-to-6-months tier; multiple for the 6-months-to-1-year tier.

Medical attendant visa

Up to two attendants. The attendant pays the same US$80 + US$3. The attendant's name and passport number must be endorsed on the hospital invitation letter.

Vaccination certificates

Iraq is not on India's yellow fever endemic list and not on the polio-affected list.

Documents you need

As published by Embassy of India, Baghdad. Missing any one of these is the most common reason a medical visa application is rejected.

  1. 1Printed online application from indianvisaonline.gov.in, selecting mission IRAQ-BAGHDAD (barcode beginning IRQB) or IRAQ-ERBIL
  2. 2Two recent 2×2 inch photographs, white background; sign the first and last page of the form
  3. 3Original passport with photocopy, at least 2 blank pages and 6 months validity — all passports if you hold dual nationality
  4. 4Copy of Iraqi national ID, or a valid Iraqi residence permit if you are a foreign resident
  5. 5Invitation letter with auto-generated barcode from a recognised hospital in India
  6. 6Recommendation letter from your treating doctor in Iraq
  7. 7Proof of funds for your stay in India
  8. 8If no attendant travels with you, a certificate stating that no medical attendant is needed
  9. 9Biometrics are compulsory, captured at VFS if not recorded in the last five years

The hospital invitation letter

Required, with an auto-generated barcode, from a recognised hospital in India. Where an attendant travels, their name and passport number must appear on the same letter. The Erbil consulate warns that applications not supported by these documents will be rejected.

This is the document we handle for you. Send us your diagnosis and reports and we obtain the invitation letter from the hospital in the format your mission requires — at no charge.

Fees and after you arrive

Official fee

US$80 visa fee plus US$3 Indian Community Welfare Fund levy. The same fee applies to the attendant. Non-refundable whether the visa is granted, refused, or issued for a shorter period.

FRRO registration

Register with the FRRO/FRO within 14 days of arrival only if your visa is valid for more than 180 days. Children under 12 are exempt.

The two-month gap rule does not apply to medical visas

The rule requiring a two-month gap between visits for Iraqi nationals applies to tourist visas only, not to medical visas.

Every figure on this page comes from official Government of India or Indian mission sources, last checked 2026-08.
